Open Study Tour in Iceland 2025
Embark on a transformative journey to Iceland with the GeoCamp Iceland Study Tour 2025. This immersive 10-day programme is designed for students, educators, and enthusiasts eager to explore the intricate connections between geology, renewable energy, and the impacts of climate change in one of the world’s most dynamic natural environment. A requirement to participate in the tour is a confirmation that that participants have either completed or are currently enrolled in B.S. degree in relevant fields. This is a non-accredited course and is subject to minimum number of enrolled participants. Guided excursions will include visits to geysers, geothermal springs, and iconic geological formations such as Þingvellir National Park, Geldingadalir Volcano, and Reynisfjara’s basalt columns. Learn how Iceland leads the world in renewable energy, utilising its volcanic and geothermal resources to produce electricity and heat sustainably. Visits to geothermal power plants, such as Hellisheiði, and hydroelectric projects will provide first-hand insights into how Iceland’s energy sector operates. Participants will also explore innovative projects like Carbfix, which captures and stores CO₂ in basalt, demonstrating Iceland’s commitment to mitigating climate change. Witness the visible effects of climate change on Iceland’s glaciers, including field visits to retreating ice caps and outlet glaciers such as Sólheimajökull. Engage in discussions on the global implications of glacial melt and rising sea levels, as well as Iceland’s efforts to adapt to and combat these changes.
